Moving Dialogue: Bucharest/NYC Dance

MOVING DIALOGUE: A Bucharest/New York Dance Exchange
Romanian choreographers Mădălina Dan, Mihaela Dancs, Paul Dunca, Vava Ştefănescu, and dance critic Gina Şerbanescu meet their American peers and US audiences

An exchange presented by Movement Research, Romanian Cultural Institute in New York, National Dance Center Bucharest, Dance Theater Workshop and Gabriela Tudor Foundation, and facilitated by the artists Cosmin Manolescu and Levi Gonzalez

Moving Dialogue aims to foster engagement and interaction between both emerging and established American and Romanian dance artists. The project focuses on dialogue, networking, artistic process and professional development through studio research and residencies, classes and workshops, group practice sessions, panel discussions, and informal performances. The project kicks off in October 2010 in NYC, and will continue through June 2011 in both New York City and Bucharest.

Moving Dialogue is a project initiated by partners, based on the initial commitment of the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York and National Dance Centre Bucharest. Additional support is provided by the Trust for Mutual Understanding.

As journalist Gina Şerbănescu notes, “The diversity of choreographic languages and the interdisciplinarity of Romanian choreographers’ views on dance are two important characteristics of Romanian choreography today, and the artists involved in the Moving Dialogue project demonstrate this in their work. Vava Ştefănescu is known for her search to develop new modalities of revealing psychological, social and cultural patterns through a very personal artistic language. From choreographic installations to performances based upon current social themes, Vava’s artistic choices are always in tune with different categories of spectators. Mădălina Dan explores more and more a style in which the performative aspects of the text and the choreographic language meet, in which conventions and stage mechanisms are attentively questioned and shaped into original stage creations. Mihaela Dancs has developed a personal dance language through an investigation of the relation between the inner reality of the performer, the stage reality and the function of the audience. Paul Dunca chooses his topics from very different fields of inspiration, combining a very personal dramaturgy with an artistic language inspired by social dilemmas or psychological aspects. The artistic profiles of the four choreographers - who are also very gifted dancers - mirror together the reality of Romanian contemporary dance nowadays.”

Join us for a series of public events to meet these artists and learn more about the Romanian contemporary dance scene.
