OUR SCHOOL, a film by Mona Nicoara and Miruna Coca-Cozma, in Silverdocs's Sterling U.S. Feature Competition
Shot over the course of four years, OUR SCHOOL follows the attempt to integrate isolated rural Roma (or “gypsy”) children into the mainstream school system of Romania. Focusing on three young Roma, 7-year-old Alin, 12-year-old Beni and 16-year-old Dana, this fascinating film takes an unflinching look at the challenges on both sides of a longstanding tradition of prejudice. Already far behind the learning curve, Alin, Beni and Dana struggle against family expectations and negative stereotyping in hopes of ultimately creating a better future for themselves.
Now in its ninth year, Silverdocs is the most talked about documentary festival in the United States, called “Non-Fiction Nirvana” by Variety, the “Pre-eminent documentary Festival in the US” by Screen International and the “premiere showcase for documentary film” by Hollywood Reporter.
