October 26th, 2010 marks the international release of the highly anticipated Naxos album of Matei Varga, with piano music by Romanian composer, George Enescu.
The CD includes the Sonata for Piano in F sharp minor, Op. 24 No. 1, for which Matei Varga was awarded the Special Prize for the best performance of Enescu's piano music at the "George Enescu" Piano Competition in Bucharest. Together with this work, the CD features the Suite No. 2 in D major, Op. 10 and excerpts from the Suite No. 3, Op. 18, "Pieces impromptues".
George Enescu, who was internationally famous as a composer and violinist, but also as a conductor and pianist, had a huge influence on a wide range of musicians and composers of the 20th century. His pupil Yehudi Menuhin thought of him as "the greatest musician." This CD features works from Enescu's younger years, which are yet little-known to international audiences.
"I profoundly enjoyed the marvelous playing, so sensitive to the last detail, so powerful and impressive throughout. These are really poetic interpretations which, I feel sure, will not fail to move every music-lover. This is an extremely important contribution to propagating successfully Enescu's piano music." says Lory Wallfisch, President of the "George Enescu" Society of the United States, Inc.
