One of the most important opera singers of the early 20th century, Hariclea Darclée (born in Bucharest in 1860) became famous after replacing Adelina Patti as Juliette in Gounod's opera (1889). She was the favorite mezzo-soprano of Mascagni, Bizet, and Puccini, among other great composers, and the first performer of La Wally by Catalani (1892), I Rantzau by Mascagni (1892), Iriss by Mascagni (1898).
Mihai Iacob's movie, a portrait of Hariclea, nominated for Palme D'Or in Cannes in 1961, was the first Romanian movie to raise strong critical acclaim and get distributed worldwide. 'Mihai Eminescu' Literary Circle and RCINY invite you on April 29 to see the movie and meet its director, who now lives and works in Los Angeles.
