Grig is the 19 year-old son of a star of the National Theatre at the beginning of the 20th century. His own achievements are, however, slightly disappointing… Too short to get on the stage, too shy with women, too excessive in his lifestyle, the son is about to make the greatest mistake, to commit the one thing his father would think to be the unforgivable sin: to direct a movie! He is dreaming to make the most grandiose and long film ever, the exact retelling of the war with the Turks, in which Romania gained its independence, 35 years earlier. The lavishly styled The Rest Is Silence vividly recreates turn-of-the-century Bucharest and the dream of a film that set into motion the soon century old Romanian cinematic tradition. The War for Independence (1912), the first Romanian feature film, on whose creation the film is based, will be presented in a special screening.
