Just returned from a successful 11 day / 8 countries European tour promoting their latest album Sam Newsome & Lucian Ban Ensemble (Sam Newsome, sop sax & compositions; Lucian Ban, piano & compositions; Alex Harding, bari sax & bass cl; Michael Bates, bass and Willard Dyson, drums) will present live at Cornelia Café the acclaimed “ Romanian-American Jazz Suite”.
A unique album, the collaboration fruit of two very different cultures, it is a multi-movement work composed by saxophonist Sam Newsome and pianist Lucian Ban, combining Romanian folk music and American jazz. It represents the perspective of both an American jazz musician exploring Romanian folk music, and a Romanian jazzman reinvestigating the music of his country after having lived in America for several years.
The CD was released in US in July 2008 with a national tour to glowing press – Don Heckman of L.A.Times called it “….one of the more unusual musical encounters of the year “, JAZZTIMES’ Bill Milkowsky says in his review “ This unique collaboration between American soprano sax player Sam Newsome and Romanian pianist Lucian Ban, both players on the New York jazz scene for several years, offers further evidence that jazz is indeed a universal language in the 21st century….” Budd Kopman of All About Jazz says “…The Romanian-American Jazz Suite is delightful—emotionally as well as physically moving“, and Terrell Holmes in his review “…Translations of European folk songs into the jazz idiom certainly isn’t new, but one would be hard pressed to find a better example of how it should be done than this.”
