DROM NYC presents Mardi Gras Special with Isle of Klezbos Sextet & Sanda Weigl's "Gypsy in a Tree" with Shoko Nagai, Satoshi Takeishi, Kermit Driscoll on TUE, February 24.
Sanda Weigl learned gypsy songs on the streets of Bucharest and found early success as a child star on Romanian television. Later she was a rock singer in East Berlin, and was tossed into prison for protesting against the communist regime. In 1992 she moved to the US and quickly became known as the "Gypsy Queen of Downtown New York". Avant-jazz neighbors from Sanda's adopted home New York City, including luminaries like Shoko Nagai on piano and accordion (and arrangements), Kermit Driscoll on bass and Satoshi Takeishi on percussion serve as a balance beam for her thunderous, mezmerizing and sinfully spooky vocal “Gypnastics”.
