András Visky lectures at CDC

Rollins College (Orlando, Florida)

April 6 – 8, 2017
RCI New York supports the participation of playwright András Visky, from Romania, at The Comparative Drama Conference (April 6-8), organized annually by Rollins College, in Orlando (Florida).

The Comparative Drama Conference is an international, interdisciplinary event devoted to all aspects of theatre scholarship. It welcomes papers presenting original investigation on, or critical analysis of, research and developments in the fields of drama, theatre, and performance. Every year over 170 scholars from both the Humanities and the Arts are invited to present and discuss their work. Conference participants have come from over 35 countries and all fifty states.

In his talk, András Visky will point out his play “The Unburied” is a voice composition, closer to an oratorio, rather than to a classic dramatic structure, having usually in the middle a story of a heroine. Mother Theresa is the central figure of his play, an allegory of her life that draws parallels between her sense of vocation and Antigone’s sense of duty to bury her brother. The play connects the two figures through their need to bury the dead, but also to care for the genuinely needy ‘sea of unburied bodies'.

András Visky is a poet, playwright and essayist and the resident playwright at Cluj-Napoca Hungarian Theatre, Romania, where he also holds the position of associate artistic director. His plays have been staged in several countries including Romania, Hungary, France, Italy, Poland, Slovenia, England, Scotland and the United States. He has a DLA (Doctor of Liberal Arts) from the University of Theatre and Film, Budapest, and since 1994 he has lectured at the Babeş-Bolyai University in the Department of Theatre and Television. His most recent play “The Unburied” will have its world premiere at Foreign Affairs Theatre, London, in November 2017.
